CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Ryan: I’m canceling the camping trip. I don’t think it’s a good idea. And I hereby announce that you’re a graduate of the Lawhill Life Plan.

She stared at the text, anger and sadness warring inside of her. She couldn’t help it. Tears spilled over.

So, what, he was just done with her now? He’d kissed her and dropped her? All last night he’d avoided her, but she’d hoped they’d have a chance to talk it through. After all, they had planned a two-day excursion in the woods. There’d been lots of time to talk.

Under any other circumstances she would have drafted a witty, cutting reply. Something to keep the banter going between them. But she couldn’t think of a valid response. She was simply angry, and more than a little bit hurt.

She tapped into the anger and decided to channel it. So Ryan didn’t want to go? Fine. She didn’t need him. She was becoming a new woman, and she could do this on her own. No more pining after unavailable men. If anything, Ryan had probably done her a favor and saved her from another mistake.

Ainsley shoved the socks into a corner of her hiking pack. She lifted it and slung it onto her back, testing the weight.

Heavy, but not too heavy. She could walk thirteen miles with this, couldn’t she? It would be like one long drawn-out arms and back workout, which would be almost as satisfying as attacking a punching bag with Ryan’s face painted on it.

She glanced through her apartment one last time. Everything she’d piled on the coffee table was packed and on her back. All appliances were unplugged and she’d made sure to charge her cell phone.

She straightened her shoulders, shifting the weight on her back. Her stomach did a little flip of remorse.

She’d known immediately that he’d regretted kissing her last night. The second he pulled away, his eyes went round and his mouth fell open, as if he’d forgotten that she was the person attached to her mouth.

The memory of that kiss sent a flush through her body. It had been fantastic. Tantalizingly slow and sensual. The kind of kiss that made her toes tingle when she saw one in movies. The kind of kiss that wasn’t supposed to happen to people in real life.

She bit the inside of her cheek, willing herself not to think about it. Surely there were plenty of men in the world who could kiss like that. Wasn’t that what Ryan had set out to teach her? She just needed to get out there and find one of them, one who was relationship material.

Damn it, she was still going to miss him. Because they both knew what had to happen now. They had to pretend like there’d been no kiss, that it had just been a silly spur-of-the-moment mistake and that they both knew they were better off as friends.

We are better off. They could never be what the other one needed. At least now there was a chance they could salvage the friendship.
